Lasting Powers of Attorney

A Lasting Power of Attorney lets someone else look after you if you become incapable of looking after yourself.

Property and Financial Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA)

A property and financial affairs LPA allows you to appoint someone to make decisions for you if you become incapable of making them yourself:

  • Buying or selling a house or other property
  • Dealing with your tax affairs
  • Operating bank and building society accounts
  • Claiming benefits for you

You may wish to give a Power of Attorney to a friend or relative. Husbands and wives often nominate each other. It is a powerful document and, rather than take risks, many decide to appoint a professional attorney - Cripps Trust Corporation Limited - either on its own, or with a family member. This ensures that professional expertise and financial protection are always available.

Personal Welfare Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA)

Attorneys appointed under a personal welfare LPA can make decisions on your living accommodation and care, consent to (or refuse) medical treatment on your behalf and manage day-to-day matters such as diet and dress.

Enduring Power of Attorney (EPA)

Lasting Powers of Attorney have replaced Enduring Powers of Attorney. Enduring Powers entered into before 1 October 2007 remain valid and can still be used.

+ Private Lives issue 13 - Autumn/Winter 2009
The first hints of winter frosts are felt in Tunbridge Wells as this edition of Private Lives goes to print. Summer in Devon seems distant a memory now: at Paignton Zoo the keepers are busy with animals indoors and at Salcombe Dairy the ice cream delivery bicycle is garaged until the spring. Increasing unemployment affects clients at all levels and Roger Byard, back from his sabbatical, is giving strategic advice although there is a sense the worst may be behind us.

+ Private Lives issue 12 - Spring 2009
These are difficult times for everyone. The news is full of stories of redundancies, restructurings and businesses collapsing. But it doesn't all have to be negative; in every downturn there is an upside that can work to your advantage. In this issue, we take a look at some of the opportunities available. If you are a leaseholder, this is an excellent time to make an offer for the purchase of the freehold. Freehold values are calculated based on the value of the property;so if the property has dropped in value, so will the price of the freehold.
