Increases to Capital Gains Tax

Increases to Capital Gains Tax

The Conservative-Liberal Democrat government have agreed to tax "non-business capital gains at rates similar, or close to those applied to income".

This could mean that rates more than double from 18% to 40% or even 50%.

Gaines for H M Revenue & Customs on Residency - February 2010

The Court of Appeal has released its judgment in the Gaines-Cooper case.

The short background is that an entrepreneur - Robert Gaines-Cooper - asserted that he had become nonresident and non-domiciled in the UK. The Special Commissioners decided the domicile position against Mr Gaines-Cooper as he had retained links with the UK. However, possibly of more importance was the point regarding residence.
