Contracts for the sale and purchase of land need to be written in precise terms. If the language is clear there is no justification for looking any further even if it produces a result that one party may not have intended. But what if the language is obviously incorrect? It has long been the case that the court has been able to correct obvious “mistakes” in contracts – such as clerical blunders or grammatical mistakes – as part of the process of working out what those contracts mean.
